The World of Trolls

The Reader's Digest Universal Dictionary defines the meaning of the word troll as:-

  1. A supernatural creature of Scandinavian folklore variously portrayed as a friendly or mischievous dwarf, or sometimes a dangerous giant, that lives in caves, in the hills, or under bridges.

  2. A tiny, hairy plastic monster, often put as decoration on the end of a pencil.

Catapult Troll Maquette

Catapult Troll Maquette

The sturdy and immensely strong Seige Tower Troll, seen in Return of the King steadily pushing the immense towers full of orcs closer and closer to the city walls. Sideshow and WETA introduce a four-part series of Troll busts -- reproductions of the actual pre-production maquettes used during the design process for the film Return of the King. Artists at WETA created these maquettes under the direction of Richard Taylor, studies of the various trolls that fought for Sauron during the siege of Minas Tirith. These maquettes were used by the artists tasked to determine the final armour design & skin colouration, and served as reference for the digital artists that brought the trolls to life on screen.

In animation and movie special effects, a maquette is a model of an intended work, used by artists and animators as a reference tool to help retain character consistency.
