Prey
by
Michael Crichton
Whenever
I think of Michael Crichton I think of dinosaurs and
Jurassic Park - large animals, somewhat deadly and
intriguing.
Prey
introduces us to more bad guys but these are too small to be
seen with the naked eye. Here we are dealing with
self-replicating nanotechnology.
A
cloud of nanoparticles breaks loose and starts to terrorise
the company that has developed it.
Crichton
is a skilled suspense writer and this story is no exception.
In his foreword, the author warns of the real dangers of
technology that continues to evolve more quickly than common
sense.
Perhaps
due to this somewhat sobering thought, the story is scary
and gripping. In no way can it be called a classic but, for
a different entertaining read, Prey
is recommended.
Certainly
books that can be called 'far-fetched' are often fun. But
Crichton's skill in writing this tale gives an interesting
concept that may leave the reader with a chilling question,
"Could this really happen?"
