Reach for the Sky

Northern Lights  is the first part of the "Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman. Here is a fantasy story that is beautifully written, funny and lively.

The story is entitiled 'The Golden Compass' in the U.S. and the film also commands the same name.

It is not a simple tale; however the writing by Philip Pullman has such great description and pace that the story becomes exceptional in quality.

Set in a parallel world very similar to our own, Lyra and her Daemon (pronounced like the English word "demon") named Pantalaimon, eavesdrop on a meeting involving her uncle Lord Asriel.

They hear about mysterious tales of Dust, a city that hangs in the air above the Aurora Borealis. Lara's friend Roger disappears and the ensuing quest by her and Pantalaimon, lead them to the bleak splendour of the North where a team of scientists are conducting unspeakably horrible experiments.

With armoured bears and witch-queens this story captures the imagination. Finding the courage to put the book down before finishing is the real challenge!!
