Fortunately, becoming a successful entrepreneur doesn't have to be as difficult
as most people imagine. By taking the time to sit down and evaluate your skills,
your interests, and your business, you can position yourself for success.
Here are the basic elements for becoming a successful entrepreneur:
1) Successful entrepreneurs honestly and candidly evaluate their interests,
strengths, and weaknesses. Many would-be entrepreneurs fail right from the start
because they fail to consider these factors when selecting a business. Instead,
they simply focus on what they think will make them the most money.
Starting a business with the sole purpose of making money is almost certainly a
recipe for disaster. When adversity arises, it's simply too easy to throw in the
towel, rather than dig in and find a solution.
Instead, focus on your strengths, weaknesses, and interests:
Your business should be in line with your core competencies. Are you excellent
with numbers? If so, then starting a service oriented business that requires
sharp math/analytical skills, such as accounting, surveying, or financial
planning may be an excellent fit. If you are adept at design, then perhaps
launching an interior design consulting business may be for you.
Your business should mirror your passions and interests. Of course, no one is
going to tell you that they lay awake at night fantasizing about income taxes,
but for a person who loves to work with numbers and dig in to regulations and
requirements, starting a tax preparation business won't seem so much like work.
For an artist, however, starting this type of business will likely seem like
torture.
You should make an honest assessment of your weaknesses. Is your desk cluttered,
with documents piled haphazardly? Then your organizational skills are probably
not where they should be to handle a complex business. IF this is the case, you
have to decide whether you are going to invest in improving your organizational
skills, or outsource these tasks to make sure your business stays afloat.
2) Successful entrepreneurs are consistently on the lookout for new
opportunities. When you're stuck in a job, you are forced to fear loss - that
is, getting demoted or let go. When you are an entrepreneur, though, the fear of
missed opportunities far exceeds the fear of loss. Whether you're looking for
discoveries that will allow you to create another stream of income, or ones that
will allow you to enhance your existing business, keeping a vigilant eye on new
opportunities is crucial to your success as an entrepreneur.
3) Successful entrepreneurs are persistent. They make up their minds that their
endeavours are going to work, and they do what it takes to make success happen.
This means dealing with adversity and obstacles not as signs of doom, but as
opportunities for improvement.
Keep in mind that "persistence" is not the same as "insistence", though. A savvy
entrepreneur knows the difference between mere obstacles and deal killers, and
responds to them accordingly. A persistent entrepreneur will look at a truly
insurmountable obstacle, and use it as a cue to redirect. You'll find that many
successful entrepreneurs have had to "reinvent" themselves many times throughout
their careers - just because you've gone as far as you can with one income
stream doesn't mean you're ruined - you simply must have the persistence to pick
another direction and focus your energy there.
